Mashoto Mokgethi, the hub head of South African Tourism, shares a few tips on how you can enjoy summer.

Mokgethi encouraged early risers to make the most of the cool, serene mornings. She asked: “Why sleep in when you can catch that early morning glow.”
Whether it's a sunrise hike in the picturesque Drakensberg mountains, a stroll along Durban’s sandy shores or enjoying a morning coffee at a vibrant café in Johannesburg, there’s something special about starting the day before the heat kicks in.
“Plus, you’ve got the whole day ahead to adventure, explore and enjoy,” she added.
Cool off in style
For those looking to relax in the summer heat, Mokgethi suggested visiting refreshing spots such as the crystal-clear pools of Tsitsikamma, embarking on a leisurely cruise down the Orange River or enjoying a picnic under the trees in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
She advised to always have a towel and swimsuit handy: “You never know when the water will call your name. And don’t forget your sunscreen.”
Lekker local, not overdone
Steering clear of the typical tourist traps, Mokgethi highlighted the charm of hidden gems like Nieu-Bethesda, known for its artistic flair, Paternoster’s tranquil beaches, and Hogsback’s enchanting forests.
“These spots may be more low-key but are full of magic and make for a January adventure that’s more about heart than hustle,” she explained, encouraging travellers to seek out authentic South African culture.
Fill your belly and feed your soul
Travel is as much about food as it is about exploration. As Mokgethi aptly put it, “Mzansi’s got flavour for days.”
Whether you're salivating over tucking into bunny chows in Durban, savouring fine wines in Stellenbosch or enjoying braai delights in the Karoo, dining becomes an integral part of your journey.
Mokgethi recommended discovering local eateries, reading reviews and booking in advance for popular spots, ensuring that your culinary experience matches your travel expectations.

Part of the allure of travel is spontaneity and Mokgethi recommended keeping plans flexible.
“The best trips are when you’re rolling with the punches,” she noted. So when spotting a rustic shisa nyama or a sign for a scenic dirt road, take the plunge and explore. It’s the unplanned moments that often create the most cherished memories of your travels.
Pack light, pack right
Lastly, Mokgethi suggested keeping your packing light. “Grab your flip-flops, your go-to summer outfits, a pair of shades, and a wide-brim hat to protect against the African sun.
Throw in sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and perhaps a lightweight jacket for those surprise late-afternoon breezes,” she advised.
The focus should be on enjoying the journey and not lugging around excessive luggage.
