Halala! Umafikizolo’s “Uyoncengwa Unyoko” has won Song of the Year at the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards. The awards were held at the Durban International Convention Centre on Saturday, April 25, marking a major night for South African music and celebrating artists across multiple genres.
Accepting the award, Umafikizolo expressed gratitude to his supporters. He said: “Thank you to everyone for the support. This means a lot to me. I wish my mother wherever she is could see these wins.”
Released in mid-2025, “Uyoncengwa Unyoko” quickly became a viral hit, especially on TikTok, where it was widely used in videos and challenges. The song also achieved strong streaming numbers, setting records for daily streams by a solo artist in South Africa on Spotify, reaching over 14 million streams within a few months of release.
The title translates roughly to “You will be begged by your mother.” The track explores a break-up narrative where a partner expects emotional pleading after ending a relationship. Instead, the narrator rejects that expectation and chooses self-respect. The lyrics centre on the idea that he will not beg for love and instead returns the sentiment of detachment.
A key line in the song is “Ngeke ngikuncenge mina, uyoncengwa unyoko,” which means “I will not beg you; you will be begged by your mother.”Umafikizolo is a Maskandi musician from Mnambithi in Ladysmith, KwaZulu Natal. He is known for blending traditional Maskandi sounds with modern melodic elements, helping his music connect with both older audiences and younger listeners across digital platforms.
