A row has erupted at Houghton Golf Club after a man claimed he was kicked out for displaying a Palestinian flag on his car. But management insists the issue is about neutrality, not politics.

A frequent visitor to the club claimed he was abruptly barred, not for misconduct, but for displaying the flag.

The incident quickly went viral and sparked debate about political expression at private venues.

Louis Seeco told IOL the confrontation happened while he was preparing for a round of golf.

He said the flag was not a spur-of-the-moment decision but a long-standing expression of solidarity.

"On April 17, I arrived at Houghton Golf Club with a Palestinian flag visibly affixed to my vehicle," he said.

He added that he had displayed it consistently since early 2024 as a peaceful symbol of support for Palestinians.

Seeco said his intention was not to create tension but to express his views.

"My intention has never been to provoke or disrupt, but rather to express, in a lawful and non-confrontational manner, a position grounded in empathy, conscience, and a commitment to human rights," he said.

He explained that he entered the club, played his round, and was only approached afterwards by management about the flag.

The general manager, James Loughnane, has moved to share the club's stance.

In a statement, he said that the rules apply to all political and religious symbols on the property.

He said that the club's diverse membership was the reason behind the restriction.

"Houghton Golf Club is proudly diverse and inclusive."

Loughnane said the club respects a wide range of beliefs but warned that political displays can create tension and that "such displays are, by their nature, divisive and can be experienced as inflammatory or exclusionary by others."

The club, he said, does not take sides on global or local issues and aims to keep the focus on sport and socialising.

"The club does not promote, endorse, or take positions on political or religious causes."

He added that the policy is designed to protect the environment and applies across the board.

"We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping to maintain a neutral, welcoming, and harmonious atmosphere for all who enjoy the club."

The ANC has slammed the decision. "The ANC in Greater Joburg Region is deeply outraged and unequivocally condemns the discriminatory and unconstitutional decision by the Houghton Golf Club to ban Seeco."

The party argued that the policy amounts to censorship and undermines constitutional freedoms.

"As the region that houses this club, we refuse to allow such apartheid-style gatekeeping to persist in Johannesburg."

The statement framed the dispute as a broader battle over freedom of expression and political solidarity.

The party also tied the controversy to South Africa's stance on the Middle East.

"As the ANC in Johannesburg, we reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the people of Palestine in their just struggle for self-determination, freedom, dignity, and statehood."
